I love the brain. I mean don’t we all? One thing I wish though, is that I understood more about how my brain worked before I took a course on it in college!
As you know, I work in an intermediate school level setting now, and I think it is the perfect time to start teaching kids about their brain, how it works, and its effect of emotions and behavior. This book, Flooded, by Allison Edwards is a great read for other counselors, teachers, even parents, who want to work with their own children and teach them better emotional regulation.
Allison talks about how our brains become “flooded” at times, and our ability to make rational decisions go out the window. It happens to all of us, right? What do we do in those situations? How do we best support children when their brains are “flooded”? As a School Psychologist, I was familiar with some of this, but the book provides great concrete examples (instead of this…try saying this….), and validation on ways I handle things with my own babes at home and students in school. It has great advice to working with teachers and parents incorporating these concepts.
I loved every chapter in the book, and the section on teaching children to self-regulate was especially helpful. This quick but informative read would make a great book group or just for you when you have free time!
