Hi all! I have been deep into March Madness and general 2020/2021 chaos, but I am coming to you today with another GREAT book. I have said it before, but books are just my favorite way to tackle topics…with children from preschool age (my own kids!) to my 5th graders. Sitting in my office and relaxing with a book has easily become by favorite way to bring a calm vibe into my office this year.
I am so impressed with Jenny Simmons’ book “I Can Say No”. This is an absolutely invaluable and needed resource that hits on so many different topics. First and foremost, it helps children and adults feel comfortable setting boundaries (see below for my favorite page), and it also encourages reader to be comfortable with the things they choose.
Reading this book for the first time, I was so impressed with the illustrations and diversity of the characters in the book.
This book would be fantastic for students who struggle with the word “no”, but really is applicable for so many ages. With my youngest children, it was a great book to introduce the topic of boundaries and consent. With my oldest students, it led to important discussions on standing up for what you believe in. As always, the National Center for Youth Issues gives parents and educators some talking points and tips at the end. In one of my groups, it provided some students with a spark after reading and researching Malala, per their suggestion.
