Do you need a book to support your students or own children through change? Don’t we all??
Nothing lifts my spirits during one of the most difficult years of this career like a new Julia Cook book! “Don’t be Afraid to Drop” is an updated version of an older title. I didn’t have the original version, but my students and I have loved this one!
Julia Cook has a way with words, and integrating social emotional lessons into adorable stories. This book is about a raindrop named Hopp who is scared of change, and happy with a comfortable life up on the clouds (like all of us at some point, right?).
With some encouragement and advice, Hopp learns about all that can be accomplished if you take some risks.
I think that this is a book that can be used for any ages, in support of so many things! I read it with my own preschooler and talked about courage, and one of my students who was transitioning back from distance learning. The lesson in it can be applicable to so many! I loved the illustrations in this one particularly.
After reading it, we talked about courage, and times that we have had to show it. We also talked about the different emotions that change brings about, and drew some changes that brought up big feelings.
Have you read it? I would recommend Julia Cook’s “Don’t Be Afraid To Drop” to any elementary teacher or parent, or middle school educator. I also think this would be a great book for parents to read with their children to facilitate a conversation about change. I always recommend books to parents when they come to me asking for advice about having tough conversations.
