I wanted to share a set of books that I have been using for years, and that kids really love.

What to do When…
These books are workbooks for kid issues, that are broken down into chapters, and help kids to relate what’s going on in their heads to something in real life, and to figure out how to help themselves when it happens. I love these books for short(er) term counseling for a specified reason.
My favorite favorite book is What to Do When You Worry Too Much. I used this book so much, in fact, that I had to replace it from overuse this past Fall. Another time, I gave it to a student to read at home, and she brought the whole thing back 2 weeks later completed. I love recommending to parents who are looking for tools to help at home. It relates growing your worries to growing tomato plants, and kids just love it!
My second favorite is What to Do When Your Temper Flares. Although all of these books are based on CBT principles, this one puts anger into perspective in a way so many struggle with noticing-other people do not make you mad. You have control over what upsets you.
There is also a book for OCD behaviors, overcoming negative thoughts and more. These are the perfect books for counseling in schools because they are broken up by concrete skills, have practice integrated within them, and have skills that can be shared immediately and integrated into school and home.
Have you used these books? What are your thoughts?
