As someone who owns more than 10 Julia Cook books, I jumped at the opportunity to read and review her newest book, A Flicker of Hope. I was excited to read any new book that she had, and I fully expected to love it. What I did not expect was me tearing up in my car outside of Starbucks as I read this book.
You see, we all have those days when the dark clouds loom over us, clouds that others can’t see, but know they are there. I had been having a few of those days, and this book reminded me to reach out, and to remember to have that tiny flicker of hope.
The book is a story about hope-and tells the tale of a candle who needs a boost of hope. Not only did I love it, but my elementary students were easily able to connect to it as well. What I love about this book is that every time I read it, I notice something else the pictures are depicting.
After talking about the importance of hope, hope builders, and sharing our own gifts in A Flicker of Hope, I had some great conversations with my students about their strengths and gifts, and times then they had been affected by a hope builder.
There are so many great quotes from this book, but the one I needed to read when I picked it up was this:
It’s always okay to admit to yourself, “I just can’t do it today.”
Do yourself a favor and pick up this one, you won’t regret it.
