At the start of this school year, I was faced with one of the most difficult times of my career when one of my students lost a parent whom I’ve worked with for many years.
In some ways, I have dedicated anything I can to offer support and in others, I feel helpless. One of the first things I did was to buy some storybooks on grief. I’ve always said that when I can’t find the right words, books can.
The book is written about a little tree coping with the loss of his father. Grief is Like a Snowflake follows journeys of both the tree and the father, and helped open up discussion about loss for my students. Relating to the feelings of the little tree and the questions he has has been great for discussions.
As always, the activity book helped with some ideas for counseling books.
