Hey guys!
I often get questions on interview tips (internship and jobs) from amazing followers, and I wanted to be able to give the best advice possible, so I asked you all over on Instagram. There were so many great tips, I figured I would compile them here as well!
- Accept your role as a student who is still learning: I’m glad so many of you said this. When you are interviewing for an internship, you may feel the need to impress your potential supervisor. But remember, the goal of internship is to learn and prepare for your career. You shouldn’t know it all before entering internship, so don’t feel like you have to act like it.
- Be honest: If you don’t know something, say it. If you have a desire to work in one setting versus another, be honest about it. It will pay off in the end, and if you lie, it will most likely come back to bite you (truth!)
- Be yourself, and connect: If I could go back to my graduate school days, I would stress this to my past self. Make sure your internship supervisor is someone that you connect with, someone you will see yourself working with every single day. This person will teach you so much, and you want to be able to take full advantage of everything they have to offer.
- Do your research: Just like you would for a job, do your research about the district and school you are interviewing for. Nothing crazy, but have some background, and be ready to answer the question of “Why here?”
- Think about your strengths: Interns are interns, but are still part of a greater team. What do you bring to the team? Think about it ahead of time!
- Have some questions ready: What does supervision look like? What does your space look like? What are their expectations for interns? What about testing and report writing? Have a list of questions, and don’t forget to ask them!
Good luck, you will be great!
